About Phase-I

Our Story

Governance Monitoring Centre Nepal is the product of a collaboration project between Kathmandu-based NGO Centre for Social Change and funding partner The Asia Foundation, which aims to create an enabling environment to foster state-society relationships in Nepal.

Despite radical political and structural changes in the last decade, experts believe that Nepal’s citizen-government engagement quotient is still severely limited. GMC Nepal aims to boost this engagement by shedding light on the Federal Government’s policies, laws, and execution programs in our key areas with the use of rigorous policy & implementation analyses through advanced qualitative research and quantitative statistical methods.

“CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS ARE THE KEY DRIVING AGENTS FOR DEFENDING CIVIL RIGHTS AND SHAPING DISCLOSURES, POLICIES, AND SOCIAL NORMS. THEY MUST THUS BE ACTIVELY PROTECTED, SUPPORTED, AND ENCOURAGED FOR ANY GOVERNANCE SYSTEM TO THRIVE.”

Dr. Prakash Bhattarai, Research Advisor

In its first year of activity, GMC Nepal is dedicated to focus on three primary areas of governance:

1. Health
2. Education
3. Migration

Each of these areas are individual cornerstones of effective governance, central to a society’s functioning, and mutually affect one another across various levels of political structures. Additionally, they are all directly impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, which presents an elevated need for urgent monitoring analyses. Please find out research efforts summarized in the form of up-to-date reports, findings, and media engagements on the Publications section. Additionally, you can also find opinion pieces and other exploratory articles in our Blog.

GIVEN THE NEW FEDERAL STRUCTURE, GROWING DATA LITERACY, EXPANSIONS IN THE TECH SECTOR, AND INCREASE IN DEMAND FOR CIVIC-ACTION MECHANISMS, IT IS A GREAT TIME FOR GOVERNANCE RESEARCH IN NEPAL!”

– Shuvam Rizal, Research Lead

True to our core mission, we are committed to involve the community in all undertakings with complete transparency. We actively communicate our findings across various channels – including policy briefs, reports, infographics, media partnerships, social media, traditional media engagement – all consolidated in this website.

This project has been developed on the basis of five years long learning and observations gained by CSC through its various research & project interventions, from national to local level and with community-based interactions with a wide range of people. CSC considers this project a need-based solution focusing on the promotion of strong state-society relationships, with the aim of achieving effective public participation and engagements in strengthening the new federal governance structure of the country. In short, we want to work with our government to to make the delivery of services and conversations about engagement with its citizens as smooth and effective as possible.

We are always open to new ideas and collaboration opportunities.
Please feel free to reach out to us via Email or Social Media with questions, ideas, proposals, or just to say hello!
